The White House and Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT), who helped pass legislation earlier this year, announced that President Barack Obama is signing the Unlocking Consumer Choice and Wireless Competition Act.
This is very important news for most cell phone user in America; consumers got back the right to use their mobile phones on any network.
You can celebrate by unlocking all your phones (or telling someone else to do it) without fear of fines or lawsuits.

There are two cell phone technologies that are used by the majority of the world’s mobile phone service carrier or providers: Global System for Mobile communication (GSM) and Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA). If you have a CDMA phone, then your phone is not unlockable. End of story. However, if your phone operates on a GSM network, then it might be unlockable.

What’s the difference?

GSM cell phones use (SIM) cards CDMA phones have no SIM. SIM card is a little devise that is inserted into the phone it contains some of your information settings and your phone number. You can remove this card from your mobile phone and insert it into another phone. If someone calls your number the new phone will ring.
